Animal Shelter Update/Follow our Paws...

Post Date:12/25/2019 9:37 AM

Wilson County's New Animal Shelter Update:

Follow our Paws as Wilson County builds a new animal shelter.  We will post updates here.

Sheriff Woodard, Chief Samuel and Captain O'Neal continue to be our point of contact.  The Sheriff’s Office submitted our original proposed plans to the Department of Agriculture,  Veterinary Division for feedback and suggestion on best practices. This division inspects our shelter along with others throughout the state and is an excellent source of information.  Those plans are a part of the plans mentioned below.

January 2020 Update:

In recent weeks in January, the Sheriff's Department, County Maintenance Department and engineer/general contractor have been meeting to make some final adjustments of the new animal shelter.  If all goes well, we hope to break ground by Summer 2020 (not that far away) .

“We want to make sure that we include needs and efficiencies and other fine-tuning,” said Ron Hunt, Assistant County Manager. “With the overall goal being to have what we need to have a successful shelter that is a great place for pets and animals and creates an opportunity to connect them with a forever home.”

In the next few months citizens will see a sign going up at the NC 42 East Site indicating the new future home of the shelter.

December 2019 Update:

We are excited as progress continues on the animal shelter plans.  Finals from our engineer and general contractor should be ready by the end of January or first of February 2020.  If all goes well, we hope to break ground by Summer 2020.  In early 2020 citizens will see a sign going up at the NC 42 East Site.  As we move forward, more updates will be posted here.

 September 2019 Update:

Feedback has been shared with our local contractor/engineer to incorporate into the existing plans. Our contractors shared the revisions in September along with the additional questions and comments for staff. The Sheriff’s Office reviewed again, and work is currently being done on full design plans by January 2020 . The preliminary plans are on the link below with slight modifications from the original to incorporate the feedback from the DOA.  The shelter's new location will be NC 42 East near Solid Waste Services  and just minutes from the City of Wilson Operations Center and Wilson Community College and a short exit off of 301 highway.
