The Low Income Energy Assistance Program is a federal program that normally provides a one-time payment in February to eligible households to assist with heating expenses.

DSS officials encourage families that need help to apply. Most families and individuals receiving food assistance through the department are automatically eligible and normally receive letters stating their eligibility. These families do not have to apply.

Families and individuals who are not automatically eligible will be notified by mail that they should apply.
