The Wilson County Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program is a federally funded food and nutrition program with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The program is administered by the North Carolina Department Health and Human Services Division of Public Health, Women's and Children's Health Section, Nutrition Services Branch. The local agency implements the program from a county level.
The purpose of the Nutrition Services Office of the county agency is to provide nutrition and dietary counseling to Wilson County residents who participate in the WIC Program.
The program provides nutrition education and supplements the diet of the target population with approved foods that are chosen based on their nutritive content. The foods include infant formula, infant cereal, milk, cheese, cereal, eggs, Vitamin C enriched juice, dry beans and peas, and peanut butter. Amounts are prescribed based on appropriateness for age and/or condition. Women who are exclusively breastfeeding receive an enhanced food package assignment that includes tuna and carrots.
Foods, with their sizes and amount, are listed on vouchers which are redeemable at the sites of approved WIC vendors.
