The Environmental Health Section does not do "perc" tests. Perc
tests were eliminated in the 1970's as the way of determining suitability
for a septic tank system. Sites are currently evaluated for their suitability
to dispose of sewage in a safe and sanitary manner. The evaluation
is based on the soil quality, topography of the land and its intended use.
Permits are issued or denied in accordance to the criteria established by state law.
On-site sewage disposal systems are designed, inspected and monitored according to state law. An application must be submitted to the Environmental Health
Section of the Wilson County Health Department. A copy of the application can be
found below. A site sketch plan which shows lot dimensions, location of
proposed and actual buildings on the lot, driveways, swimming pools, etc. must
be submitted to the Environmental Health Section. An example of a site sketch
plan can be found below. A fee of $300 must be paid
The property corners and proposed building corners must be
properly flagged prior to the evaluation being conducted.
Flags will be provided to the applicant.
A septic tank should be checked periodically (every three (3) to five (5)
years, depending on use) to see if pumping is needed. This is preventative maintenance, because
not pumping solids from the septic tank can result in the drain field being
clogged from these solids.
