North Carolina ranked 5th in the nation for lightning deaths from 1990 to 2003. A study conducted from 1997 to 2001 ranked NC as 14th in the nation for the number of lightning strikes per square mile. NC experiences just under 500,000 strikes per year with an average of 9.5 strikes per square mile.
