What are your hours of operation?
The office is open from 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday except for County-observed holidays.

5.
Are there special requirements for recording deeds in Wilson County?
Yes. Before recording a deed you must acquire a
Tax Certification Sticker
from the Tax Office.

How do I change, delete or transfer names on a deed?
You will need to draw up a new deed. You will need to contact your attorney for this service. After the deed has been signed and notarized and tax certification sticker has been attached, it is then brought into our office to be recorded. The filing fees are $14 for the first page and $3 for each additional page thereafter. If there was a purchase price on the land, excise tax is due. Excise tax is $2 per $1,000 of the purchase price.

Can the Register of Deeds conduct a title search of my property and tell what liens and other documents are found?
All of the records in the Register of Deeds are public records. However, the State of North Carolina prohibits the Register of Deeds from performing title searches. You will need to contact your attorney. Attorneys use the records in our office as well as searching records in other offices to determine if the title is clear.

Do I need an appointment to take my notary public oath? What should I bring with me?
No appointment is necessary. You may come in anytime between 8am and 5pm. If you have your notice from the Secretary of State, bring that with you. The fee for taking the oath is $10, cash or business check only.

What is required to file my Military Discharge?
The original DD214 is required and a valid picture I.D. There is no fee for filing a military discharge. Certified copies are free to military veterans.

How do I register my business name?
Assumed name forms are available at

. Before filing your business name, you should perform a name search. The form will need to be signed and notarized before it is recorded. The fees are $14 for the first page and $3 for each additional page thereafter.

Are Military Discharges available to the public?
No.
NCGS 47-113.2
does not allow these documents to be available for public viewing if they are less than 50 years old. There are restrictions on who may have a copy of the discharges.

How do I obtain initial or reappointment forms for notary public?

14.
What are the hours we can apply for a marriage license?
You may come in our office to apply for a marriage license between 8am and 4:30pm. No appointment is needed.
15.
Is a premarital physical required?
No, a physical examination is no longer required.
16.
How long is the license valid?
The license is valid as soon as it is issued and remains valid for 60 days.
17.
How do I obtain a copy of my divorce?
If your divorce was processed in Wilson County, you may contact the Clerk of Court (252) 291-7502.
18.
What if the father's name is not on the birth certificate?
The father's name can be added to the birth certificate through several processes. However, certain requirements must be met. Please contact our office.
19.
What if something is incorrect on my birth certificate?
You will need to come to the Register of Deeds Office and fill out an amendment form, which we will send to NC Vital Records in Raleigh. Depending on what information is incorrect on the certificate, proof will need to be provided. The most acceptable proof is a certified copy of your elementary school records. We will be able to tell you if additional proofs are needed when you come in or call. The fee for an amendment is $10 cash for our office and $15 check or money order to NC Vital Records. It will take 8 to 12 weeks before we get the correction from Raleigh. However, NC Vital Records has an expedite service that carries an additional charge of $15. This expedite service allows us to get the correction back in 2 to 3 days.
20.
What are acceptable forms of identification?
A valid drivers license, state issued identification card, passport or military identification card.

22.
Whom do I contact regarding my vehicle title or license plates?
