Job fair is a success

DSS and community partners bring employers and job seekers together

Wilson, NC –May 29, 2014 –The 14th Annual Greater Wilson Area Job Fair brought qualified applicants and employers together to provide a pathway to employment. The “Ticket to Work” job fair was an event that focused on prequalified applicants. Applicants had to have a ticket to get into the job fair and had to have a minimum of three of the following qualifications: High School Diploma or a GED, Career Readiness Certificate (CRC), Certification through an Employment Readiness Program, a positive attitude, long term job experience, and a college diploma or certification.

This year's event was held May 14 at the Wilson County Agriculture Center. Approximately 300 people were seeking employment and 25 employers were hiring for positions.

“The goal of this year’s job fair was to provide a quality experience for the job seeker and employers by pre-screening job seekers," said Howard Handorf, Human Services Coordinator. "I'm proud of this year's Job Fair Committee. They put much time and effort into developing this one of a kind job fair."

Tickets to the event were available at several community locations:

Employers were pleased with the opportunity to have qualified applicants that were ready to work. Mary Alston with Service Xpress expressed that the event was a “good job fair and good turnout.”

“There were many job seekers that had not heard of West Corporation," said Alonza Fergeson of West Corporation. "We are looking for 150 associates by the end of July and we had good quality candidates.”

For individuals that did not have a ticket to the event, resources were made available. The Department of Labor's NC Joblink Mobile Unit was present with computers and internet access for job seekers to register on NCWORKS, complete job applications and print and copy resumes. Community resource booths were also available to assist job seekers.

The Wilson County Department of Social Services worked with community partners to provide this opportunity to connect Wilson's excellent work force with quality employers.

VITA Tax Services - Another successful year

DSS helped Wilson County's families save more of their money

Wilson County’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) helped Wilson County's families again in 2014. April 10th finished the eleventh year that volunteers provided free tax preparation services for low-to-moderate income families in our community. Our DSS staff & volunteers assisted with basic tax returns for family income levels under $51,000* a year.

This year VITA offered individuals the option of filing their own taxes online at www.myfreetaxes.com/wilson
(you will have to type this in as an internet search will not find this site).

You can file your state and federal returns on this site. There is a fee if your income is over $56,000. This site is not owned and operated by Wilson County DSS. “Services will take place at the Career Plus office, 114 Pine St., NE, Wilson, NC.

In the weeks ahead we look forward to reporting our results of helping families to save more of their own money.
