Items Banned From Disposal in Landfills

ITEMS BANNED FROM LANDFILLS

The following items are not allowed in landfills (Please recycle/dispose of these items properly)

  • Used oil
  • Yard trash
  • White goods
  • Antifreeze (ethylene glycol)
  • Aluminum cans
  • Whole scrap tires
  • Lead-acid batteries
  • Beverage containers that are required to be recycled
  • Motor vehicle oil filters
  • Recyclable rigid plastic containers that are required to be labeled # 1-7, that have a neck smaller than the body of the container, and that accept a screw top, snap cap, or other closure
  • Wooden pallets, except wooden pallets (mixed into construction waste) may be disposed of in a landfill that is permitted to only accept construction and demolition debris (C&D)
  • Oyster shells
  • Discarded computer equipment (includes laptops, desktops, monitors, video displays, printers, scanners, printer/scanner/copiers, mice and keyboards
  • Discarded TVs
  • Fluorescent lights and thermostats that contain mercury are banned from unlined landfills [In NC, all construction and demolition (C&D) landfills are unlined]
