September Happenings

ADVISORY COUNCIL
Because of the Labor Day Holiday, the Advisory Council will be pushed up one week to September 19, 2016 at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  The Advisory Council is an important part of the center.  The members help decide on new programs and activities at the center and help decide how we can better serve the seniors of Wilson County.  All members of the center are invited to attend these meetings.  See Sandra if you would like more information.                 
         
BINGO
There will not be Bingo on Friday, September 16, 2016 due to the Barbecue Chicken Plate Sale.  All other Tuesday and Friday dates for September will have regularly schedule Bingo.

CENTER ANNIVERSARY
September marks the 19th anniversary of the opening of the Center.  There will be a cake and drink to help celebrate on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 starting at 1:00 pm.  Plan to join us in celebrating this milestone (although there will be more than cake for our 20th next year).
 
CLASSIC SHAG DANCING
Beginning on September 26, 2016, we will have a Shag Dancing class that will start at 6:30 pm.  We will meet on the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th (if there is one) Monday nights.  The Instructor will be Charles Dew.  Come on out and enjoy.

COLORING CLUB
Join us every Tuesday beginning at 11:00 am in the kitchen for Adult Coloring club.  Bring your own or we will have pictures, pencils and markers available.  For September the dates are the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th.  Take some time to relax and enjoy coloring.  
  
DINE OUT CLUB
Because September is so very busy, the Dine Out Club will change to Monday, September 26, 2016 for this month.  We will leave the center at 11:00 am to travel to Smithfield and the Robbins Nest Restaurant.  This is a buffet lunch on your own.  Transportation is available or you can meet us there.  Please sign up on the board because we have limited space on the vans.   
     
HOLIDAY CLOSING
The Center will be closed for the following: Monday, September 5, 2016 in observance of Labor Day; and Wednesday, September 21, 2016 for Senior Day at the County Fair.  
    
ONE HARVEST FOOD MINISTRY
This is a choice of monthly frozen meal boxes which are available to anyone.  Orders need to be placed and paid for by September 14, 2016.  Sandra will pick up the orders on September 24, 2016 and have them at the center for whenever you can arrange to pick them up.  Cash, check or money orders are accepted.  An example is the Family Box which contains: 2 pounds chicken breast, 2 pounds chicken tenderloins, 2 pounds pork roast, 6-4 ounce beef tamales, 4 pounds chicken drumsticks, 6 count bone in pork chops, 1 pound grown beef, 1 pound breakfast sausage, 24 ounce French fries, 2 pounds vegetables soup blend, 8 count corn on the cob, 1 pound elbow noodles, 7 ounce chocolate muffin mix, 1 pound brown rice, 7.25 ounce macaroni and cheese and 10" carrot cake.  The cost for this package is $37.50.  Eleven other boxes are available at various prices.  Come to the office to see the rest of the selections and make your order.
 
PLATE SALE
On Friday, September 16, 2016, we will be having a BBQ Chicken Plate Sale fundraiser at the center from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm.  You can help us by purchasing a ticket or selling plates to your family, friends and co-workers.  The money raised will be used for the Senior Day at the Fair.  We have to pay for the food and rides.  Plates can be picked up at the Wilson County Senior Activity Center, 1808 South Goldsboro Street, Wilson.  Deliver is available for 10 or more plates.  This will be a Take Out or Eat In.  The menu consist of BBQ Chicken, boiled potatoes, vegetable, bread and a dessert.  Donation $7.00
 
RETIRED SCHOOL PERSONNEL
The Wilson county Retired School Personnel meet at the center in January, February, April, September and October.  The meeting for September will be held at the Library in Downtown Wilson on September 21, 2016 due to the center closing for the fair.  Meetings for the reminder of the school year are: November 16, 2016, January 18, 2017, February 25, 2017 and April 19, 2017. 
  
SCAN CARDS
Since the Reception Area is just about completed, anyone who has not been able to get their card or get their picture done, can do so now.  Please see the Receptionists to get your scan card up to date.
 
SCRAPBOOKING
We have a sewing class on Thursday afternoons, so we are moving scrapbooking to Wednesdays beginning at 1:00 pm in the craft room.  Bring your pictures and use our cutters, etc. to complete your scrapbook.  
   
SENIOR DAY AT THE COUNTY FAIR
The date for this year's celebration is Wednesday, September 21, 2016.  the gates will open at 10:30 am.  New this year is pre-registration which will let you get your ticket in advance and be among the first to get food and snacks.  Stop by the office or call to get on the list.  The gates will open at 10:30 am.  There will be entertainment, food, door prizes, rides and the Exhibit Hall. 
 
SEPTEMBER CRAFT WORKSHOP
Because their are so many crafts to make for the Fall and Christmas Holidays, we will be having Craft Workshops on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 and September 28, 2016.  At these workshops we will have more than one craft available for your to choose from.  Prices will vary depending on the craft.  We will start displaying the projects throughout the month so you can decide what you want to make.  For more information, see Sandra.
 
SEWING CLASSES
Our sewing group continues to meet every Thursday afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. A ll sewers and those who would like to learn are welcome.    
   
SINGERS OF OLD SONGS
The Ukulele group could use anyone who likes to sing along to come out to their practices on Friday mornings at 9:30 am.  Sing along to the tunes the band plays and just have some fun.

THURSDAY DINNER MENU
Here is the dinner menu for our Thursday night dinners: September 1st -- Labor Day Cookout; September 8th -- Fried Pork Chops; September 15th -- No Dinner; September 22nd -- Beef Tips & Rice; and September 29th -- Chicken Pot Pie.  

UKELELE GROUP
The Unique Ukes will change their class time from Mondays to Fridays beginning at 9:30 am.  All are welcome and no experience is needed.  Come on out to see what this group is all about and be sure to come to Senior Day at the County Fair to hear them perform.

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION LUNCHEON
Our annual Luncheon for honor those of you who take the time to volunteer at the Center will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 beginning at 12:00 noon in the kitchen.  This will be a special time of fellowship, good food and awards.  We take every effort to keep up to date on our volunteer hours, but if you have not received your invitation, please let the office know.

Advisory Council: new members needed to attend monthly meeting (September 19, 2016)
Birthday Party: set up and cleanup (1 person on September 6, 2016)
Instructors: needed to teach new classes of their choose (daily)

Reception Area: answering telephones and greeting members (1-2 per day)
Senior Day at the County Fair: set up, serve, assist staff (September 21, 2016)
Thursday Evening Dinner: set up and cleanup (2 people every Thursday)
              
WAYNE COUNTY STAND DOWN (also Lenoir & Wilson Counties)
This is an event on October 6, 2016 for homeless veterans and veterans in need.  Offering employment services, medical screenings, housing referrals, barber services, legal services and more.  If you know a veteran in need, please see Sandra so that we can arrange transportation.
 
YARD SALE
Our Yard Sale will be on September 10, 2016 in the parking lot.  You can get a space with one table for $5.  You may bring extra tables as needed.  The fee is used for the advertisement in the Wilson Times.  We will run the sale from 7:00 am until 12:00 noon.  If you have not arrived by 7:00 am, your table may be given to someone else.  Please stop by the desk if you would like to sign up.  The next yard sale is scheduled for October 14, 2016.
