September Happenings

Anniversary Celebration/Volunteer Appreciation
Every September we take time to celebrate our Anniversary (17 years this year) as well as take a moment to thank our volunteers for all that they do at the center throughout the year.  Our celebration will be on Monday, September 29, 2014 beginning at 12:00 noon.  We will have lunch followed by awards for the volunteers.  You must sign up if you would like to attend this event.

Breakfast
Our monthly breakfast is held every fourth Tuesday beginning at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  All are welcome.  We will have bacon, eggs, biscuits, grits, sweets, coffee and orange juice.  Plan to join us every month for this event.  Just sign up on the board if you can attend on September 30, 2014.

Classic Car, Jeep & Motorcycle Fundraiser
There will be a Classic Car, Jeep & Motorcycle Fundraiser to benefit the Wilson County Senior Activity Center.  This will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014 from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm at the Wilson Family Bowling center, 1700 Ward Boulevard, Wilson, NC.  Registrations for cars are $20 and Vendors are $25.  The activities include: Earthshakin' DJ Service; Children's Activities; Door Prizes; trunk or Treat (3:00 - 4:00 pm); Craft and Gift Vendors; Food Vendors; Senior Center Choice Trophy; Car Costume Contest; and lots more.  Trophies will be awarded.  For more information on this great event, you can contact Bob or Debra Howard at (252) 373-7623 or strawberryma60@gmail.com.

Craft Class
We are getting ready for fall with a Pumpkin Door Hanger class on Thursday, September 25, 2014 beginning at 10:00 am in the kitchen.  Everyone will have a chance to decorate a great wooden pumpkin for the front door.  All supplies will be provided.  The cost for the class is $10 and you need to prepay and register in the office by September 23, 2014.  Look for examples of this craft in the craft area of the hallway.

Dine Out Club
For September, the Dine Out Club will be traveling to Red Oak for Caroline BBQ and Chicken.  We will leave the center at 11:00 am to enjoy lunch (on your own).  Our van is available or you may drive yourself and meet us there.  The date will be Wednesday, September 24, 2014.  Please sign up on the board if you would like to attend.

Game Day
On Tuesday, September 9, 2014, we will have an afternoon of games in the Multi-purpose Room.  We will have card games, board games, Wii games and corn hole set up at 1:00 pm for all to enjoy (or bring your own games).  You can play alone or get a group together for some fun.  We will have some snacks for everyone to enjoy.  Come on out and plat your favorite game.

Holiday Closing
The Center will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2014 in observance of Labor Day.  The staff of the Senior Center wishes you all a safe and happy holiday weekend.  We will re-open on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 7:30 am.

Senior Day at the County Fair
September is here and it is time for our Annual Senior Day at the County Fair.  The date is Wednesday, September 17, 2014.  Gates will open at 10:30 am and we will have a full program beginning at 11:30 am.  Come early to visit the exhibit halls.  As always, we will have hot dogs, entertainment, popcorn, information booths, door prizes, flu shots, and more.  A great addition this year will be that the Ferris Wheel will be open for all seniors to enjoy a free ride.  Plan to spend the day at the fairgrounds with us.

Travel Club
Please plan to come to an organizational meeting for our new Travel Club.  What is it?  A chance for you to be involved in the process of selecting locations fro trips and "banking" money to be use4d for future trips.  We will meet at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, September 23rd in the Multi-purpose Room with our Travel Coordinator, Devora.  Plan to attend to see what this is all about.

Yard Sale
The yard sale originally scheduled for August has been changed to Saturday, September 27, 2014 because of scheduling conflicts.  We will begin at 7:00 am and continue until at least noon -- you can stay as long as you like.  A great addition will be that Wilson County will be having a large yard sale here as well in order to raise funds for the United Way campaign.  The cost of $5 gets you a space and one table.  You may bring as many additional tables as you like.  We will advertise in the Wilson Times and on our Facebook page as well as in the Swap and Shop.  Please sign up in the office as soon as possible, because spaces are filling up fast.
