October Happenings

The Advisory Council will be on October 10, 2016 at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  The Advisory Council is an important part of the center.  The members help decide on new programs and activities at the center and help decide how we can better serve the seniors of Wilson County.  All members of the center are invited to attend these meetings.  See Sandra if you would like more information.                 
On Friday, October 14, 2016, we will be offering lunches for sale.  Lunch will include a Chicken Salad Sandwich, chips and a pickle.  The cost is $3 and you may sign up in advance in the office.
For October, the dates for Shag will be the 3rd, 17th, 24th, and 31st and will start at 6:30 pm.  The Instructor will be Charles Dew.  Come on out and enjoy.  
Join us every Tuesday beginning at 11:00 am in the kitchen for Adult Coloring club.  Bring your own or we will have pictures, pencils and markers available.  For October  the dates are the 4th, 11th, 18th, & 25th.  The theme will be fall.  Take some time to relax and enjoy coloring.  
For August, the winner for the color contest was Jean Seagle.  For September, the winner was Julia Ellis.  Congratulations to you both!
Because we want to go to the Sandpiper Restaurant in Kinston this month, the times will need to change because they do not open until 3:00 pm.  We will leave the center on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 2:00 pm to arrive for a 3:00 pm late lunch/early dinner.  Seafood is the specialty here, but other options are available.  Van transportation is available or you may go in your own vehicle.  If you ride the van, there will be a $2 charge.  Please sign up on the board if you would like to join us.  
On Friday, October 28, 2016, we will be having snack and drink to celebrate the season.  We will meet in the Recreation Room at 1:00 pm.  Please sign up on the board if you would like to attend.
October 19th -- Fall Wreath Class:
Join us in making a Fall/Halloween Mesh, Burlap or Floral Wreath for yourself or to give as a gift.  All supplies are provided and the cost is $15 per wreath.
October 26th -- Treats Class: We will get in the kitchen for this class and make some edible treats and get some great recipes for the season.  All supplies are provided and the cost of the class is $7 per person.  All Craft Classes meet at 10:00 am.

This is a choice of monthly frozen meal boxes which are available to anyone.  Orders need to be placed and paid for by October 12, 2016.  Sandra will pick up the orders on October 22, 2016 and have them at the center for whenever you can arrange to pick them up.  Cash, check or money orders are accepted.  An example is the Family Box which contains: 2 pounds chicken breast, 2 pounds chicken tenderloins, 2 pounds pork roast, 6-4 ounce beef tamales, 4 pounds chicken drumsticks, 6 count bone in pork chops, 1 pound grown beef, 1 pound breakfast sausage, 24 ounce French fries, 2 pounds vegetables soup blend, 8 count corn on the cob, 1 pound elbow noodles, 7 ounce chocolate muffin mix, 1 pound brown rice, 7.25 ounce macaroni and cheese and 10" carrot cake.  The cost for this package is $37.50.  Eleven other boxes are available at various prices.  There are also new boxes added this month.  Come to the office to see the rest of the selections and make your order.
The Wilson county Retired School Personnel meet at the center in January, February, April, September and October.  Meetings for the reminder of the school year are: November 16, 2016, January 18, 2017, February 25, 2017 and April 19, 2017. 
Since the Reception Area is just about completed, anyone who has not been able to get their card or get their picture done, can do so now.  Please see the Receptionists to get your scan card up to date.
We have a sewing class on Thursday afternoons, so we are moving scrapbooking to Wednesdays beginning at 1:00 pm in the craft room.  Bring your pictures and use our cutters, etc. to complete your scrapbook.  
Our sewing group continues to meet every Thursday afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. A ll sewers and those who would like to learn are welcome.    
The Ukulele group could use anyone who likes to sing along to come out to their practices on Friday mornings at 9:30 am.  Sing along to the tunes the band plays and just have some fun.

Here is the dinner menu for our Thursday night dinners: October 6th -- Meatloaf; October 13th -- Pork Roast; October 20th -- Chicken Pastry; and October 27th -- Vegetable Beef Soup and Salad.           


Do you have questions about some of our trips or need more information?  Come to the center on October 26, 2016 at 6:00 pm and we will go over all of our trips for those of you who are seasoned travelers or those who may want to start traveling with us.  All are welcome -- you do not need to be a member of the center or even a senior to travel with us.

The Unique Ukes will change their class time from Mondays to Fridays beginning at 9:30 am.  All are welcome and no experience is needed.  Come on out to see what this group is all about and be sure to come to Senior Day at the County Fair to hear them perform.

WAYNE COUNTY STAND DOWN (also Lenoir & Wilson Counties)
This is an event on October 6, 2016 for homeless veterans and veterans in need.  Offering employment services, medical screenings, housing referrals, barber services, legal services and more.  If you know a veteran in need, please see Sandra so that we can arrange transportation.
Our Yard Sale will be on October 15, 2016 in the parking lot.  You can get a space with one table for $5.  You may bring extra tables as needed.  The fee is used for the advertisement in the Wilson Times.  We will run the sale from 7:00 am until 12:00 noon.  If you have not arrived by 7:00 am, your table may be given to someone else.  Please stop by the desk if you would like to sign up.
