May Happenings

The monthly meeting will be held on Monday, May 6, 2017 at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  Meetings will be held every month on the second Monday.  All members of the center are invited to hear about upcoming plans for the center.  We will also take suggestions about activities and events that you would like to see. Please plan to join us.
Join us for exercise from your chair every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday beginning at 8:00 am in the Multi-Purpose Room.  We can rerun at other times during the day for those who are not early risers. 
The winner of the coloring contest for April is Diane Turner.  Congratulations!!  The coloring club meets every Tuesday beginning at 11:00 am in the kitchen.  Pictures and pencils/pens are available or you can bring your own from home.  The them for may is "May Flowers".        
Because of so many activities in May, Craft Classes will be held on the second and fourth Wednesdays at 10:00 am this month.  Craft Club will be on the first, third and fifth Wednesdays at 1:00 pm.  For May we have:  
        -  May 10, 2017 -- Bath Crafts:  We will make some bath salts and lotions to give as gifts for Mother's Day or to keep for yourself.  The cost is $6.00 and we will be able to make a variety of scents.  Please sign up in the office by May 8th.  
        -    May 24, 2017 -- Terra Cotta Pot Decorating Class:  Make a garden friend using terra cotta pots and paint.  The cost is $10.00 per project.  Please sign up in the office by May 22, 2017.   
All supplies to complete your projects will be provided.  
The restaurant for May is Larry's Restaurant in Raleigh.  We will leave the center at 10:30 am for lunch on your own.  Please sign up in the office and pay $2.00 to reserve your space.    
Every week the center offers the following events: Craft Club (1st, 3rd, 5th Wednesdays, 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm); Tai Chi (Thursdays 10:00 am); Sewing (Thursdays 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm); Bingo (Tuesdays and Fridays 1:00 pm); and Ukulele (Fridays 9:30 am).  THESE ARE ALL FREE EVENTS!  
By now we hope that you have all had a chance to see and use the new water filling station located at the water foundation area.  It's all part of the initiative to get us to drink more water and less sugary drinks.  Check it out if you have not and be sure to get a bottle from the office to use.

The Center will be closed on Monday, May 29, 2017 for Memorial Day.  We will reopen Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 7:30 am.  We hope you all have a happy and safe holiday week.

Please continue to scan in when you arrive at the center.  This system helps us follow our programs and see how the response is.  It also lets us know that you are in the building.  This is an important part of the center and we appreciate you using your card when you come in.  Don't have a card?  Please stop by the office to get yours today.  

At our scheduled Thursday Dinner on May 25, 2017, we will have a celebration for Memorial Day.  The menu will be hot dogs and hamburgers and fixings.  Be sure to sign up in the office by 12:00 noon on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.  Dinner is at 6:00 pm.  

Join us for cake and tea to celebrate Mother's on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 1:00 pm in the pool room.  Please sign up on the board if you would like to attend.

No meeting is schedule at the center for the month of May for this group.  Meetings will resume in September.  

This annual event will beheld on Friday, May 12, 2017 at Farmington Heights Church on Raleigh Road.  Contact the office if you need assistance signing up.
The 34th Annual Down east Senior Games will be May 1, 2017 thru May 23, 2017.  This is open to everyone ages 50 and older.  The events will include: swimming, golf, badminton, pickle Ball, corn hole, croquet, billiards, cycling, bocce, horseshoes, shuffleboard, table tennis, bowling, softball, basketball and individual field events.  The Silver Arts include: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, basket weaving, crochet, jewelry, knitting, needlework, pottery, quilting, stained glass, decorative painting, weaving, woodcarving, woodworking, woodturning, literary and performing arts.  
Applications are available in the office and are due by April 3, 2017.

The Division of Services for the Blind holds its monthly meeting on the third Tuesday from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.  Meetings are held at the center and for May, the meeting will be on May 16, 2017. 
We are happy to report that Al Raby is back with Tai Chi every Thursday at 10:00 am.  This is a fun class and is free to participants.
March brought us a new class and we are having fun and learning a lot.  Anyone is welcome to join tap classes every Monday evening from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm.  The cost is $5 per class and the instructor is Robin Davis.  
The menu for April is:  May 4th --
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with make your own tacos and fixings; May 11th -- Baked Chicken, Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans; and May 18th -- Fried Fish, French Fries, coleslaw.  **Dinner is at 5:00 pm; you must sign up by 12:00 noon on the Wednesday before the meal; and if you usually have leftovers from your meal, please bring a container to take it home.        
Our tax preparers are finished for this year, but if you have any problems or questions, let the office know and we can get you in touch with the preparers.

Every last Thursday of the month, Sandra will be available at 6:00 pm (after Thursday Dinner) to update trips and answer any questions you may have regarding upcoming trips.  This will be a casual meeting and all are welcome.  The May meeting will be on Thursday, May 25, 2017.
Advisory Council: 
New members are needed to plan activities and bring new ideas to the staff.  We meet every month on the second Tuesday beginning at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  (May 8, 2017) 
Birthday Party: The first Tuesday of the month immediately following Bingo (around 2:30 pm) is a chance to celebrate birthdays for the month with cake and drank.  Volunteers to set up and clean up are always welcome.  (May 2, 2017)
Easter Egg Hunt: Need egg hiders at 3:00 pm (April 13, 2017) 
Do you have a skill that you would like to teach others?  Let the office know and we can arrange a schedule for you.
Library: Our books need to be shelved quite a few times every month due to people borrowing and returning.  Anyone who can spend a little time sorting and shelving would be greatly appreciated.
Reception Area:  We are in need of someone to answer phones, gives tours and greet guests on Mondays and Wednesdays after 12:00 noon.  No experience necessary.
Thursday Evening Dinner:  Between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm, we need help setting up the tables and getting the food on the table.  Following the meal we need help clearing tables, washing and sanitizing tables and getting dishes prepared for the dishwasher.  (May 4th, 11th, 18th)
Get Ready.  The Walking Club will begin meeting again in May.  We will have more incentives and locations for everyone to enjoy.  Keep checking back. 

With the weather warming up, we will begin monthly yard sale at the center.  The first will be on Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 7:00 am until noon.  There will be a $5.00 charge for your space  and one (1) table.  You may bring additional tables if you would like.  Spaces are given out on a first-come, first-served basis.  Someone will be at the center at 6:00 am so that you can begin setting up.
