March Happenings

Advisory Council
All participants of the center are eligible to be a part of the Advisory Council which meets every second Monday of the month at 9:00 am.  The purpose of the Advisory Council is to help with planning for the center as well as to advocate for yourself and other seniors.  Please plan to join us on March 9, 2015.                    
 
Art Classes
Due to a recent accidental fall, Art Classes with Horace will be put on hold until he is able to come back..  Please keep Horace in your thoughts and prayers until he recovers.  Those who are currently taking the class will have two classes left in the session.  
  
Breakfast
Our monthly breakfast is held every last Tuesday of the month beginning at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  All are welcome to enjoy eggs, bacon, biscuits and more.  Please sign up on the board in the hallway if you will be attending.
    
Charming Chimers
The chime group has begun practicing again at the ProMusic Conservatory on Nash Street every Wednesday beginning at 10:30 am.  No musical talent is needed to enjoy this class.  See Sandra for more information.
    
Cooking Around the World
Something that we enjoyed a few years back, was a cooking class with a worldwide flair.  Each month we "travel" to a different country and enjoy some of their cruisine.  Since we are starting in March, we will begin with Ireland.  Each participant will receive the recipes and we will all cook together and enjoy our meal when we have it finished.  The cost for ingredients and instructions is $4 per person.  Our first class will be on Monday, March 16, 2015 beginning at 10:00 am.  Please sign up in the office if you would like to attend.

Drumming Yoga
Come and get the therapeutic rhythm of the beat with Arcelio.  This free class meets every Tuesday at 10:30 am in the Multi-Purpose Room.
 
Dine Out Club
In the month of March we get to have two Dine Out Trips.  The first is to the Cypress Grill in Jamesville, because the February date had to be cancelled due to the weather.  We will now go on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.  We will leave the center at 10:00 am to get to the restaurant in time for lunch. If you don't care for herring, they have other menu options.  The next trip will be our regular March Dine Out.  We will travel to Holt Lake seafood & Barbecue in Smithfield.  The date for this is Wednesday, March 25, 2015.  We will leave the center at 11:00 am for lunch (on your own).  Please sign up on the board if you would like to join us.

Easter Egg Wreath Class
On Wednesday, March 11, 2015, there will be a craft class held in the kitchen beginning at 10:00 am where we will be make wreaths from plastic eggs and Easter decorations.  There is a sample of one in the hallway for you to look at.  Please sign up and prepay for the class in the office.  Each wreath is $10 and all supplies will be provided to you.

Fundraiser
We will be having a fundraiser selling Easter candy centerpieces.  All money that we raise through the fundraiser is used for Senior Day at the Fair and Santa for Seniors.  Please keep your eyes open in the hallway during March for more information about this event.

Holiday Events & Closing
Because Easter is so early in the month of April, we want to let you know about the Easter events so that you can put them on your calendar.  Holiday Closing: The center will be closed on Friday, April 3, 2015 for Good Friday.  On Thursday, April 2, 2015, we will have our Annual Easter Egg Hunt & Social beginning at 1:00 pm.  Bring your Easter Basket to collect eggs and join us for some treats.  At 5:00 pm, we will have Easter Dinner featuring ham and all the fixings.  Sign-up sheets will be available soon.

Saint Patrick's Day Dinner
Our annual corned beef and cabbage dinner to celebrate St. Patrick's Day will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2015 beginning at 5:00 pm.  Don't miss out on some Irish favorites and a chance for some socializing.  Please sign u on the board in the hallway if you would like to attend.

Saint Patrick's Day Social
On Tuesday, March 17, 2015, we will have a social in the Recreation Room to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.  Be sure to wear something green so that you don't get pinched and join us for snacks and a chance to socialize beginning at 1:00 pm.

Senior Games
Applications for the Down East Senior Games are available in the office now.  We hope that you will sign up to participate in these fun and healthy activities.  We will be having some workshops in March & April to let you know the rules for different events.  We will start off on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 with a meeting for anyone who may be interested in competing in the games or would like to get more information.  The meeting will start at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  Please plan to attend.  At that meeting we will make plans for workshops to practice for events and get you ready to go.
  
Senior-Senior Prom
It's almost time for the Senior-Senior Prom at Fike High School sponsored by the Wilson Crisis Center, the YMCA and Fike.  This is a free event for all seniors 65 and older and a chance to get dressed up, enjoy dinner and dancing.  Parker's is catering the meal and entertainment is by Bill Myers and the Monitors.  In order to attend, you must sign up by calling either Nancy Sallenger at the Wilson Crisis Center at 237-5156 or Kathie Davis at the YMCA at 291-9622.  Don't miss this chance to relive some high school memories and make some new ones.  Flyers for this event are available in the office.

Tax Preparation
The Wilson County Senior Activity Center will begin offering free Federal and North Carolina Tax Preparation on February 2, 2015.  This will be the thirteenth year that this service has been offered to senior citizens and those with low-to-moderate incomes.  All volunteers involved in this program have been trained by the IRS and have passed all IRS certification tests.  Last year, over 600 people took advantage of this service at the center.  The VITA/TCE Assistance Program will run through April 15, 2015.  Services will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm.  To utilize this service, an appointment will be required.  To make an appointment, call the Wilson county Senior Center at 252/206-4059 between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm., Monday thru Friday, or stop by and make an appointment in person.  What you will need to bring to help with filing your return is as follows: Copy of your 2013 tax forms, if available; filer's picture ID; social security cards; W-2 and 1099's; documentation for other income; documentation for all deductions such as day care, education, property taxes and mortgage interest paid; bank account information if using direct deposit; and health insurance procured through Affordable Health Act and/or procured through other sources; ie., Medicaid, Medicare and private providers.

Reception Area -- one person per day is needed to answer telephones in reception area.
Library --one volunteer is needed to shelf books two times per month.
Classes and Activities -- volunteers are needed who can lead new classes and activities (no limit)

Zumba Toning
On Thursday evenings before the regular Zumba class, Kim will offer a toning session beginning at 4:30 pm.  Come see what it's all about.
