March Happenings

ADVISORY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  Meetings will be held every month on the second Monday.  All members of the center are invited to hear about upcoming plans for the center.  We will also take suggestions about activities and events that you would like to see. Please plan to join us.
  
CENTER UPDATES
You may have noticed a few changes around the Center.  The wood around the building has been covered with vinyl to give it a newer look.  The Exercise Room has new carpet and some new equipment.  We received 2 treadmills, but one of them was missing crucial pieces.  Those pieces have been ordered and we hope to have the second treadmill up and running shortly.  We are working on more treadmills for the room.

CHAIR EXERCISE
Chair Exercise classes are now offered every Tuesday through Friday at 8:00 am.  Non early risers may rerun the session at 9:00 am.
 
CHICKEN SALAD LUNCH BAG
We will be offering a Chicken Salad Lunch bag on Friday, March 24, 2017 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.  Included is a Chicken Salad sandwich, chips and pickle.  Bags are $3.00 and you can sign up for one in the office.

COLORING CLUB
The winner of the coloring contest for February was Julia Ellis.  Congratulations!!  The coloring club meets every Tuesday beginning at 11:00 am in the kitchen.  All are welcome for this relaxing and fun activity.  Bring your own book and crayons/pencils or use the ones that we have.      
  
CRAFT CLASSES & EVENTS
Crafters will now have two different craft events to choose from:
1.  Every first and third Wednesday of the month, there will be an informal Craft Club.  Each crafter can bring a project to work on for themselves.  This can be any kid of craft life painting, scrapbooking, woodwork, etc.  Sometimes it can be easier to work on projects with others around.  This will also be a chance to get some new ideas and share yours.  We meeting from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
2.  Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, will be devoted to a group craft planning by the center.  There will be a fee to cover the cost of materials and everyone will complete their project that day.  For January, we will have:
      -  March 8, 2017 -- Spring Mason Jar:  Using twigs, birds and flowers, we will create spring scene for your home.  Cost is $7.00 per project.    
        -  March 22, 2017 -- Easter Egg Tree:  Using plastic eggs, we will decorate a tree for your decorating.  The cost is $5.00 per project.  
Upcoming
       -   April 12, 2017 -- Peeps Centerpiece: This will be for your Easter Table.  Cost is $7.00 per project.
Please sign up for all craft classes at least 48 hours in advance in the office, so that we can make sure we have enough supplies for everyone.
 
DINE OUT CLUB
The destination for March is Grandson's Restaurant in Smithfield on Wednesday, March 22, 2017.  We will leave the center at 11:00 am to travel to Smithfield for lunch (on your own) as a group.  Be sure to sign up in the office if you are interested because space is limited.  The cost is $2.00 if you are riding the van, or you are welcome to meet us there.

EAT SMART MOVE MORE INITIATIVE
As part of this initiative, the center has received a water filling station for your use.  You can fill your bottles or cups with this filtered water and we are also expecting bottles for us to give away for your use.  Be sure to stay hydrated, especially after exercise.  
  
GAME AND POTLUCK
We had so much fun with our Family Feud game that we are going to have a new one for March.  On Tuesday, March 14, 2017, we will meet in the kitchen for a game of "Taboo".  After the game, we will get ready for a Potluck Lunch.  Please bring a main dish, side dish or dessert to share.  Let's have a great time socializing and enjoying a fun game!

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
Our recent weather makes us think that spring is in the air, but it is still March.  In case the weather changes, please remember our policy:  
  -  If the Wilson County Schools are closed, on the day of the weather event, we will also be closed.  
-  The center may close early if a weather event happens during business hours.  You can call the center for further information as it happens.
 
MEMBER SCAN CARDS
There is a list at the reception area of all seniors who need information on their scan cards.  Please stop by whenever you have a chance to make sure that we have accurate information for you.
   
RETIRED SCHOOL PERSONNEL
The meeting for February will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 beginning at 10:30 am in the Multi-Purpose Room.
 
SAINT PATRICK'S DINNER
Our scheduled Thursday dinner on March 16, 2017 will be in honor of Saint Patrick's Day.  We will have serving Corned Beef/Ham, Cabbage and Potatoes along with some great additions.  Be sure to sign up by Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 12:00pm.
 
SENIOR GAMES
The 34th Annual Down east Senior Games will be May 1, 2017 thru May 23, 2017.  This is open to everyone ages 50 and older.  The events will include: swimming, golf, badminton, pickle Ball, corn hole, croquet, billiards, cycling, bocce, horseshoes, shuffleboard, table tennis, bowling, softball, basketball and individual field events.  The Silver Arts include: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, basket weaving, crochet, jewelry, knitting, needlework, pottery, quilting, stained glass, decorative painting, weaving, woodcarving, woodworking, woodturning, literary and performing arts. 

Applications are available in the office and are due by April 3, 2017.

TAP DANCING CLASSES
We are pleased to announce adult Tap Dancing classes at the center every Monday evening from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm.  Ms. Robin Davis is the instructor and classes are $5.00 each.  Bring tap shoes if you have them, but they are not required.  Tap is a great form of exercise and the class will be geared to adults with minimal jumping.  See the office for details.

THURSDAY DINNER MENU
The menu for March is: 
March 2nd -- Meatloaf; March 9th -- Chicken Pot Pie; March 16th -- Corned Beef and Cabbage (St. Patrick's Day); March 23rd -- Stuffed Shells; and March 30th -- BBQ Pork Chops.  Be sure to sign up by Wednesday at noon to attend dinner.  Dinner is a time for food and socialization.  While we will offer takeout meals for shut-ins and those who have to work late, it is meant as an eat-in event.  Takeout meals must be arranged for by Wednesday at noon.
 
TAX PREPARATION
February 1, 2017 will bring the start of free Tax Preparation for seniors and low income adults.  The VITA?AARP Tax Preparers will be at the center on Mondays and Wednesdays as follows:
  -- March 1st, 6th, 8th, 13th, 15th, 20th, 22nd, 27th & 30th
  -- April 3rd, 5th, 10th, & 12th
In addition, there will be appointments available on Tuesdays, February 7th and 14th and Thursday, February 23, 2017.  All appointments will be scheduled between 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm.  You need to have an appointment to have your taxes done.  Be sure to bring all necessary paperwork for your filer.  Please call the office for an appointment or for more information.

TRIP INFORMATIONAL MEETING
Every last Thursday of the month, Sandra will be available at 6:00 pm (after Thursday Dinner) to update trips and answer any questions you may have regarding upcoming trips.  This will be a casual meeting and all are welcome.  The March meeting will be on Thursday, March 30, 2017.
  
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR FEBRUARY
Advisory Council: 
New members are needed to plan activities and bring new ideas to the staff.  We meet every month on the second Tuesday beginning at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  (March 13, 2017)
Birthday Party: The first Tuesday of the month immediately following Bingo (around 2:30 pm) is a chance to celebrate birthdays for the month with cake and drank.  Volunteers to set up and clean up are always welcome.  (March 7, 2017)
Instructors:  Do you have a skill that you would like to teach others?  Let the office know and we can arrange a schedule for you.
Library: Our books need to be shelved quite a few times every month due to people borrowing and returning.  Anyone who can spend a little time sorting and shelving would be greatly appreciated.
Reception Area:  We are in need of someone to answer phones, gives tours and greet guests on Mondays and Wednesdays after 12:00 noon.  No experience necessary.
Thursday Evening Dinner:  Between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm, we need help setting up the tables and getting the food on the table.  Following the meal we need help clearing tables, washing and sanitizing tables and getting dishes prepared for the dishwasher.  (March 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th)
   
WALKING CLUB
Get Ready.  The Walking Club will begin meeting again in April.  We will have more incentives and locations for everyone to enjoy.  Keep checking back.
