June Happenings

The regular monthly meeting of the Advisory Council will be held on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  The Advisory Council is an important part of the center.  The members help decide on new programs and activities at the center and help decide how we can better serve the seniors of Wilson County.  All members of the center are invited to attend these meetings.  See Sandra if you would like more information.
Our monthly breakfast will be held, as always on the last Tuesday of the month beginning at 9:00 am in the kitchen on June 28, 2016.  You will have until Friday, June 24, 2016 to get your tickets in the office.  Remember that all are welcome to enjoy eggs, bacon, biscuits, grits, pastry, orange juice and coffee.  The speaker will be Matthew from Walgreens Pharmacy and will talk about Proper Disposal of Medication.
Adult coloring books are all the rage right now, so we are going to have our very own Coloring Club.  The experts say that coloring reduces stress and blood pressure while being an enjoyable activity.  Find out what it's all about at our new club every Tuesday, June 7th, 14th, 21st, & 28th at 11:00 am.  We have plenty of coloring pages as well as colored pencils and gel pens.  Bring your own if you have them.
The coloring contest for May had the theme "Birds".  The winner of a new color book and pencils will be announced in June.  For June, our theme will be "Animals".  There is a choice of 4 different pictures at the desk.  You may take as many as you like to color, but you can only enter two.  The contest will end on the 30th and the winner announced that afternoon.

The reception area is moving along and within the next few weeks, you will see the new Reception Area.  This will give the building a more modern and open feel and make it much more efficient for our staff.  Please be careful in the construction area and pardon our appearance.  It will be looking great soon.
We will meet on Friday, June 24, 2016 at 9:00 am in the kitchen to exchange coupons and learn about sources for getting coupons.  Bring your extras and come for some information as well.
For June, the Dine Out Club will travel to Meadow Village Restaurant in Benson.  We will leave the center at 10:30 am.  Lunch is on your own and transportation is provided.  Please sign up on the board if you will attend, so that we can make sure we have enough vans.
If you have not been to the Farmer's Market on Green Street, you are missing out on a great event.  Every Wednesday from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm, anyone can shop for produce, crafts, meats, baked goods and more.  There is also food and often music.  There is a booth set up to help promote Downtown Wilson and all it has to offer.  Volunteers are needed for shifts from 8:30 am until 10:30 am and 10:30 am until 1:00 pm.  All the information you need will be given to you.  This is a great chance for those of you who call Wilson home, to really promote the city.  Signup sheets are at the desk at the center for anyone who can spare sometime for this fun event.
Join us on Friday, June 17, 2016 for a social to honor our fathers.  We will have snacks and drink in the Pool Room beginning at 1:00 pm.  You don't have to be a father to attend.  Please sign up on the board if you will be joining us.
An early reminder that the center will be closed on Monday, July 4, 2016 in observance of Independence Day.  We will re-open at 7:30 am on Tuesday, July 5, 2016.
Jack's class will continue to meet every Tuesday and Friday at 8:00 am with the exception of Tuesday, June 7, 2016.  Life Line Screenings will be here that day and taking up all of the Multi-Purpose Room.
There will be a celebration and fireworks at the Wilson County Fairgrounds this year.  The center will be involved in a number of ways.  Besides being at the event, we could use some help.  We are in need of: Bakers -- to bake a cake for the auction which will benefit the Wilson Crisis Center; Booth People -- We will be giving out information and having some games and could use some help manning the booth; and Ice Cream Float Booth -- anyone who can scoop ice cream and add soda.  See Sandra if you are interested in helping with this.

Our Thursday Dinner on June 30, 2016 will be our annual cookout celebrating the 4th of July.  Plan to join us at 5:00 pm.  Remember that you need to sign up at the desk for this event so that we can plan for enough food for all.

Craft classes meet twice a month on Wednesdays morning.  Classes may be added as we get instructors.  All classes must be registered for and prepaid in the office at least 48 hours prior to the class.  All supplies are included in the class fee and all classes begin at 10:00 am.
-- June 8, 2016 -- Fairy Garden Pot -- due to technical difficulties (Sandra broke most of the pots) this class has been rescheduled.  Those who signed up already, are good to go and we will accept any more who are interested.  The cost is $10 per pot and you must sign up and prepay at the desk by June 6, 2016.
-- June 22, 2016 -- 9:00 am -- 4th of July Wreath -- make a red, white and blue wreath for your home or for a gift.  Please note the earlier starting time because of Dine Out on the same day.  The cost for this class is $15 per project.  Please sign up and prepay at the desk by June 20, 2016.

Every Thursday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, knitters and crocheters get together to work on their projects and socialize.  Anyone with an interest in learning or working on a project are welcome to join us.  There is no fee for this session.
A Proactive Way to Stay Health & Active
Life Line Screenings go beyond regular checkups to provide a more thorough look at your health.  Advanced ultrasound  technology looks inside your arteries for signs of plaque buildup.  That's why 9 out of 10 cardiovascular doctors support preventive screenings for those with key risk factors.  There will be five (5) screenings for $149: Carotid Artery/Plaque Screening; Heart Rhythm Screening (Artrial Fibrillation); Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening; Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening; and Osteoporosis Risk Assessment.  This will be on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at the Center.  To register for your screening and to receive a $10 discount, call 888-653-6450 or www.LifeLineScreening.com/community-partners.
The Wilson County Retired School Personnel meet at the center in January, February, April, September and October.  There is no meeting scheduled for June.
The Down East Senior Games are over for another year.  Tarboro will be the host for 2017.  Start planning now for events you may be interested in for next year.  The center can provide training and assistance within this event.
Anyone of any level can join Lillian Ruffin every Thursday from1 :00 pm until 3:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room for sewing.  Bring a pattern, fabric and your sewing machine and learn how to sew or improve the techniques you already now.  The cost is $5 per session.

Our apologies to the TOPS group -- the calendar for May put the meetings on Thursdays.  The actual TOPS (that's Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meets every Tuesday at 6:30 pm in the kitchen.  New members are welcome.

The club is always accepting new members who want to learn about trips, plan upcoming trips, and raise money to help with the cost of trips.  Join Deborah following the Red Hat Club monthly meeting every first Monday of the month.  For June, that will be on the 6th.  The meeting will be around 10:00 am in the kitchen.
