June Happenings

Advisory Council
The regular monthly meeting of the Advisory Council will be held on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  The Advisory Council is an important part of the center.  The members help decide on new programs and activities at the center and help decide how we can better serve the seniors of Wilson County.  All members of the center are invited to attend these meetings.

Art Classes
Horace Raper will not meet during the summer.  We will resume in the fall and we will let you know the details when they become available.

Breakfast
Our monthly breakfast will be held on the last Tuesday of the month, June 30, 2015 beginning at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  We serve bacon, eggs, biscuits, grits, pastry and juice.  Please be sure to sign up so that we can have enough for all.

Closing
The center will be on Friday, July 3rd in observance of Independence Day.  We will re-open at 7:30 am on Monday, July 6, 2015.

Cooking Around the World
In June, let's take a "trip" to Mexico for our cooking class.  As a group we will prepare Mexican Pizza, Chicken Enchilada Casserole, Mexican Rice, and Rice Pudding.  We will sit down together to enjoy what we have prepared when it is finished.  We will meet on Monday, June 22, 2015 at 10:00 am in the kitchen to get started.  There is a $4 charge per person for purchasing the ingredients.  Please sign up on the Board.

Craft Class
On Tuesday, June 16, 2015, we will meet in the pavilion at 10:00 am to make concrete birdbaths.  The cost is $10 per person and all supplied are included.  Please sign up in the office by June 12, 2015.

Dine Out Club
In June, the Dine Out Club will travel to the Roseville Diner in Roseville on Wednesday, June 24, 2015.  We will leave the center at 11:00 am for lunch (on your own).  Van transportation will be provided.  Please sign up if you would like to attend.

Endless Yard Sale (301)
This will be the third year that there has been a 301 yard sale stretching from Benson to Roanoke Rapids (year one was only from Benson to Kenly).  Last year was the first year that Wilson County was included and we were very successful.  This year the center will have a spot to sell some items.  We are in need of gently used yard sale items -- no clothes, please.  Please bring anything you might have to donate to the center or let us know if you have larger items and we will pick them up.  The Yard Sale is Friday & Saturday, June 19th & 20th along the 301 corridor.  The County Fairgrounds also has booth space available if you are interested in having a space of your own.  See Sandra for more information

Father's Day Breakfast
Time to celebrate our fathers by having a Father's Day Breakfast on Friday, June 19, 2015 beginning at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  All are welcome for this celebration.  Please sign up on the board if you would like to attend.

Game Day
Spend the afternoon playing your favorite games -- cards, pool, checkers, board games, cornhole and more.  Anyone who is interested in playing is invited on Monday, June 15, 2015 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm.  You can get a group together or play by yourself.  We will have a light supper available at 5:00 pm for a nominal charge.  Let us know what you would like to play and we will help set it up for you.  Sign up on the board if you would like supper.  The menu and more information will be posted.

July 4th At the Fairgrounds
The Wilson County Fairgrounds will be having a 4th of July Celebration at the fairgrounds on Saturday, July 4th.  There will be a BBQ cook-off featuring local volunteer fire departments, fireman's field games, entertainment, vendors and lots more.  The day will also feature old fashioned games like sack races and the like.  The center will be sponsoring the pie eating contest throughout the day.  We could use some extra hands to help with this contest as well as to help in other areas.  Mark your calendars for this event and let the office know if you have some extra time during the day to help.

July 4th Events
On Thursday, July 2nd, we will be having a cookout beginning at 5:00 pm in the pavilion.  Tickets will be available on June 25, 2015 at dinner or until the 3rd at noon in the office.

New Red Hat Club
We are so happy to be getting a lot of new members for the Red Hat Society, but our first Monday club has reached its limit of members.  We just do not have enough vans or drivers to accommodate everyone.  Therefore, we will be starting a brand new club for new members.  The club will meet every third Monday of the month at 6:00 pm in the kitchen.  We hope that this will also give our working seniors a chance to be a part of the Red Hat Society too.  Our first meeting will be on Monday, June 15, 2015.  If you are already a member of the morning club, you do not need to attend this one.  If you would like to see what Red Hat is all about and be able to take part in the activities, please plan to be there.

Shag Changes
Our Shag Classes are expanding to two nights a week.  The new schedule is: Monday's at 6:30 pm for Beginners and 7:30 pm for Intermediate II and Advanced.  Tuesday's at 6:30 pm for Beginners and 7:30 pm for Advanced.  Tuesday classes will meet every week and Monday classes will meet every other week excepted the second Monday of the month.  Classes are in 5 week sessions and will be led by Janice Dunbar and Melvin James.  The current 5 week sessions began on May 19, 2015 but you can come join in at any time.  Come to a class and speak to Janice or Melvin about the different options.  The cost for the 5 week session is $35 per person.

Thursday Dinner
To make it easier for planning Thursday meals, we have instituted a few changes to the dinner format.  You can now purchase tickets to the meal between Thursday (following the meal) and Wednesday at noon (the day before the meal).  This will give us an accurate count of those who will be attending.  you will also have until Wednesday at noon to let us know if you cannot come and we will transfer your ticket to the following week.  If you do not have a ticket, you may still attend and will be served, based on the food still available, after those who have tickets.  We begin the meal at 5:00 pm every Thursday and all are welcome to attend.  Menus will be announced on Thursday's for the following week.

Travel Club
The Travel Club meets on the last Tuesday of the month beginning at 1:00 pm.  Plan to attend to see what plans are in the making for upcoming trips and bring some ideas of your own.
