July Happenings

Advisory Council
The regular monthly meeting of the Advisory Council will be held on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  The Advisory Council is an important part of the center.  The members help decide on new programs and activities at the center and help decide how we can better serve the seniors of Wilson County.  All members of the center are invited to attend these meetings.                    
   
Breakfast
Our monthly breakfast will be held on the last Tuesday of the month, July 28, 2015 beginning at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  We serve bacon, eggs, biscuits, grits, pastry and juice.  Please be sure to sign up so that we can have enough for all.
       
Closing
On Friday, July 3, 2015, the center will be closed in observance of Independence Day.  We will re-open at 7:30 am on Monday, July 6, 2015.
 
Cooking Around the World
In July, our class will take us to Italy.  As a group we will prepare Stuffed Shells, Antipasto and Ricotta Cheesecake.  We will sit down together to enjoy what we have prepared when it is finished.  We will meet on Monday, July 27, 2015 at 10:00 am in the kitchen to get started.  There is a $4 charge per person for purchasing the ingredients.  Please sign up on the board.    
    
Dine Out Club
In July, the Dine Out Club will travel to the Roseville Diner in Roseville on Wednesday, July 22, 2015.  We will leave the center at 11:00 am for lunch (on your own).  Van transportation will be provided.  Please sign up if you would like to attend.   
    
Game Day
Spend the afternoon playing your favorite games -- cards, pool, checkers, board games, cornhole and more.  Anyone who is interested in playing is invited on Monday, July 20, 2015 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm.  You can get a group together or play by yourself.  We will have a light supper available at 5:00 pm for a nominal charge.  Let us know what you would like to play and we will help set it up for you.  Sign up on the board if you would like supper.  The menu and more information will be posted.
  
July 4th At the Fairgrounds
The Wilson County Fairgrounds will be having a 4th of July Celebration at the fairgrounds on Saturday, July 4th.  There will be a BBQ cook-off featuring local volunteer fire departments, fireman's field games, entertainment, vendors and lots more.  The day will also feature old fashioned games like sack races and the like.  The center will be sponsoring the pie eating contest throughout the day.  We could use some extra hands to help with this contest as well as to help in other areas.  Mark your calendars for this event and let the office know if you have some extra time during the day to help.

July Craft Classes
Concrete Birdbath:
We had to reschedule the class that was to be held in June because of the weather.  We will now meet on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at 10:00 am in the pavilion.  We will making several birdbaths from concrete.  The projects will need to dry fully so they will not be able to be taken home until Friday.  The cost is $10 per person and we ask that you sign up and prepay in the office by July 17, 2015.  
Summer Wreath:  Burlap wreaths are all the rage and we will be offering a class to help you make one for your door or to give as a gift.  The class meets on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 beginning at 10:00 am in the kitchen.  All supplies will be provided for you to complete a wreath.  The cost is $10 per project and you can sign up and prepay in the office by July 10, 2015.
 
Red Hat Club #2
Because we have too many members in our Monday morning Red Hat Club, we are starting an evening group for anyone interested in becoming a Red Hat Members.  The new club meetings will be held every third Monday of the month beginning at 6:00 pm in the kitchen.  In July, we will be having an Ice Cream Social to welcome new members. Please plan to join us.  
 
Shag Changes
Our Shag Classes are expanding to two nights a week.  The new schedule is: Monday's at 6:30 pm for Beginners and 7:30 pm for Intermediate II and Advanced.  Tuesday's at 6:30 pm for Beginners and 7:30 pm for Advanced.  Tuesday classes will meet every week and Monday classes will meet every other week excepted the second Monday of the month.  Classes are in 5 week sessions and will be led by Janice Dunbar and Melvin James.  The current 5 week sessions began on May 19, 2015 but you can come join in at any time.  Come to a class and speak to Janice or Melvin about the different options.  The cost for the 5 week session is $35 per person.

Thursday Dinner
To make it easier for planning Thursday meals, we have instituted a few changes to the dinner format.  You can now purchase tickets to the meal between Thursday (following the meal) and Wednesday at noon (the day before the meal).  This will give us an accurate count of those who will be attending.  you will also have until Wednesday at noon to let us know if you cannot come and we will transfer your ticket to the following week.  If you do not have a ticket, you may still attend and will be served, based on the food still available, after those who have tickets.  We begin the meal at 5:00 pm every Thursday and all are welcome to attend.  Menus will be announced on Thursday's for the following week.
  
Senior Day at the Wilson County Fair
The Senior Day at the Fairgrounds will be on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 from 11:30 am until 2:30 pm.  The gates will open at 10:30 am.  There will be entertainment, food, door prizes, rides and he Exhibit Hall.  Mark this date on your calendar to come and enjoy the day at the fair.
 
Travel Club
The Travel Club meets on the last Tuesday of the month beginning at 1:00 pm.  Plan to attend on July 28, 2015 to see what plans are in the making for upcoming trips and bring some ideas of your own.

Volunteer Opportunities for April
Advisory Council:
new members needed to attend monthly meeting (July 13, 2015)
Birthday Party: set up and cleanup (1 person on July 2, 2015)
Breakfast: set up and cleanup (1-2 on July 28, 2015)
Game Day: set up games, assist in kitchen, and facilitate games, cleanup (2-4 on July 20, 2015)
Instructors: needed to teach new classes of their choose (daily)
Library: Shelving books (1 person twice a month)
Reception Area: answering telephones and greeting members (1-2 per day)
Thursday Evening Dinner: set up and cleanup (2 people every Thursday)
   
Walking Club
Because of the chances of hot weather at this time of the year, we will change Walking Club to 9:00 am each morning.  Meet at the front of the building and walk as much as you like around the center and the Botanical Gardens next door.  Be sure to get your log sheet from Sandra.

Yard Sale
The center offers a yard sale at least once a year and we have decided on Saturday, September 12, 2015 as the date.  You can be a part of this in two ways: either rent your own space for $5 (1 table included -- you may bring as many as you need), or donate your gently used items (no clothes, please) to the center for sale.  The sale will be from 7:00 am until 1:00 pm.  If it rains, we will have it on July 19th.  Sign up in the office if you would like your own space or bring your items any time to the center.  If you have larger items, we can arrange to pick them up at your home.

Yoga
Carole Murray will be taking the summer off, so Yoga will be off as well.  Classes will resume on Monday, September 14, 2015 at 9:30 am.

Zumba Thursday is Back
Starting on Thursday, July 9, 2015, our Thursday Zumba class will resume beginning at 5:15 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room.  Plan to join Kim Payne for this great class.  If you would line more information about Zumba, call the center.
