January Happenings

The monthly meeting will be held on Monday, January 9, 2017 at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  Meetings will be held every month on the second Monday.  All members of the center are invited to hear about upcoming plans for the center.  We will also take suggestions about activities and events that you would like to see. Please plan to join us.

We are looking for people to bake something for a Valentine Bake Sale here at the center.  You can bring something in that morning (Tuesday) or on the evening before Monday.  Anything goes: pies, cakes, brownies and more!  Proceeds will be used to purchase food items for an Easter distribution to our seniors in need.

On Friday, January 20, 2017, we will have a takeout lunch of Chicken Salad Sandwich, Chips and a Pickle.  Order yours in the office for pickup on the 20th between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.  The cost is $3 per lunch.

The winner of the coloring contest for December was Jean Seagle.  Congratulations!!  The coloring club meets every Tuesday beginning at 11:00 am in the kitchen.  We have some coloring pages, pens and pencils available for you to try, or you may bring your own.  Pages for the monthly contest are available at the front desk and must be turned in by the 28th of the month in order to qualify for judging.  The theme for January is "Winter".

Crafters will now have two different craft events to choose from:
1.  Every first and third Wednesday of the month, there will be an informal Craft Club.  Each crafter can bring a project to work on for themselves.  This can be any kid of craft life painting, scrapbooking, woodwork, etc.  Sometimes it can be easier to work on projects with others around.  This will also be a chance to get some new ideas and share yours.  We meeting from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
2.  Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, will be devoted to a group craft planning by the center.  There will be a fee to cover the cost of materials and everyone will complete their project that day.  For January, we will have:
      -  January 11, 2017 -- Feathered Friends:  In this class we will make feeders for birds to get them through the winter.  We will make a seed wreath and an edible birdhouse.  The cost is $7 per person.
      -  January 25, 2017 -- String Art Heart:  It's amazing what you can do with wood, paint and string.  Join us for this class where we will make a string art decoration for the home.  The cost is $8 per person.
      -  Looking Ahead:  On February 8, 2017, our class will be doing Valentine Yard Art.  We will make a floral and heart plant pot to put outside your door or keep inside to enjoy.  The cost is $12 per person.
Please sign up for all craft classes at least 48 hours in advance in the office, so that we can make sure we have enough supplies for everyone.

In January (weather permitting), we will travel to Bailey for a visit to the Bailey CafĂ©.  We will leave the center at 11:00 am for the trip and lunch on your own.  You are welcome to drive yourselves there and meet us or travel in the van for $2.00 per person which helps defray the cost of the gas and pay for lunch for our volunteer drivers.  We will return to the center following lunch.  Please sign up in the office if you would like to attend.

Craft Club
-- Wednesdays, 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm; Tai Chi -- Thursdays, 10:00 am until 11:00 am; Sewing -- Thursdays, 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm; and Ukulele -- Fridays, 9:30 am until 10:30 am.  ALL ARE FREE CLASSES!!!

There will be changes in the shop for 2017.  We will be bringing in gently used items to go along with the handmade crafts.  Now we will have a thrift store/crafts store.  Please remember that the handmade crafts are not thrift shop items and the prices are set by the person who made the item.  Check us out!

The policy for closings due to weather conditions are as follows:
 -  If the Wilson County Schools are closed, we will also be closed on the day of the event.  Please call the center for further information after the initial event or storm.

Join us on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 for a Potluck Lunch (bring a dish to share) along with a Hot Cocal Social (cocoa and lots of fixings) followed by a fun game of Family Feud.  Sign up for a team for the feud or come to share a meal and watch the fun.  Team Sandra will take on Team Tiffany and each team needs 4 more members.  Don't miss this one!

The meeting for January will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2017 beginning at 10:30 am in the Multi-Purpose Room.

Starting in January, anyone who wants a takeout meal will need to let the office know by noon on Wednesday.  **If anyone has any of the takeout plates that belong to the center, please return them so they can be used.  **If anyone feels that they will not finish their entire meal and want to take leftovers home, please bring a container for that purpose.  The center does not always have extra containers and because we are trying to stay "green", we have no disposables.  The menu for January is:  January 5, 2017 -- Chicken Pastry; January 12, 2017 -- Shepherd's Pie; January 19, 2017 -- Soup/Salad/Sandwich; and January 26, 2017 -- Baked Ham.

Thank you to all who "adopted" a senior from the tree in Walmart.  We were able to brighten the holidays for 60 deserving seniors.  We will continue to keep the jar at the front by the check-in computer.  Please drop your extra change in.  These funds will be used for Easter food, Santa for Seniors and the Senior Day at the Fair.
