April Happenings

AARP TAX PREPARATION
The Senior Center is still offering free tax preparation for seniors until April 13, 2016.  This is your last chance to get your taxes filled out before the deadline.  Dates for April are Mondays the 4th and 11th; and Wednesdays the 6th and 13th.  Please call the office for an appointment to be scheduled between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
 
ADVANCE DIRECTIVES
Wilson Medical Center Hospice will be at the center on Friday, April 15, 2016 from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm to speak informally to participants about wills POA's and more.  Stop by their table in the hallway for more information.

ADVISORY COUNCIL
The regular monthly meeting of the Advisory Council will be held on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 9:00 am in the kitchen.  The Advisory Council is an important part of the center.  The members help decide on new programs and activities at the center and help decide how we can better serve the seniors of Wilson County.  All members of the center are invited to attend these meetings.  See Sandra if you would like more information.                 
    
BREAKFAST
Our monthly breakfast will be held, as always on the last Tuesday of the month beginning at 9:00 am in the kitchen on April 27, 2016.  You will have until Friday, April 22, 2016 to get your tickets in the office.  Remember that all are welcome to enjoy eggs, bacon, biscuits, grits, pastry, orange juice and coffee.  The speaker will be Matthew from Walgreens Pharmacy and will talk about Proper Disposal of Medication.
      
BUILDING CHANGES
The center is making some changes to the building in the very near future.  We hope that these changes will be beneficial to the center and make it more pleasing to our participants:
-- Kitchen: the kitchen will be getting new bottom cabinets and sink
-- Reception Area: we will be opening up the front entrance more when you come in to make it more efficient to check in and receive information.
Please bear with us while we are under construction.
  
CHANGES TO OUR ENTRANCE
You have probably noticed by now that the doors to the building have been changed.  The only entrance and exit to the building is the front door.  The doors in the pool room, exercise room and craft room are Emergency Exits Only.  Please continue to enter and exit through the front door.  This change is fro the continued safety of our participants as well as our handicapped guests.

COLORING CLUB
Adult coloring books are all the rage right now, so we are going to have our very own Coloring Club.  The experts say that coloring reduces stress and blood pressure while being an enjoyable activity.  Find out what it's all about at our new club every Tuesday beginning March 1, 2016 from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm.  We have plenty of coloring pages as well as colored pencils and gel pens.  Bring your own if you have them.

COUPON CLUB
We will meet on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 9:00 am in the kitchen to exchange coupons and learn about sources for getting coupons.  Bring your extras and come for some information as well.
       
DINE OUT CLUB
Join us on Wednesday, April 27, 2016.  We will travel to King's Restaurant in Kinston.  We will leave the center at 10:45 am.         
 
EVENING CLASSES
These are the following classes that are offered: Zumba: Tuesdays at 5:15 pm (Multi-Purpose Room); Line Dance: Thursdays at 6:30 pm (Multi-Purpose Room): Shag: Tuesdays from 6:30 until 7:30 pm & 7:30 until 8:30 pm (Multi-Purpose Room); TOPS: Tuesdays at 6:30 pm (kitchen); and Knit/Crochet Circle: Thursdays at 6:00 pm (Recreation Room).
   
KNITTERS/CROCHETERS
Every Thursday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, knitters and crocheters get together to work on their projects and socialize.  Anyone with an interest in learning or working on a project are welcome to join us.  There is no fee for this session. 

RETIRED SCHOOL PERSONNEL
Meetings of the Retired School Personnel are held at the center on the third Wednesday of the designated months.  The group will meet April 20, 2016 at 10:30 am in the Multi-Purpose Room.  If you are a retired teacher or school employee, plan to come and see what this is all about.  
  
SENIOR GAMES
The deadline for participation in the Games has passed, but that doesn't mean that the rest of us can't support our local competitors.  The events are happening during the first two weeks of May all around our region.  If you are interested in seeing any of the events or attending to see what it's all about, let Sandra know and we can arrange transportation.  
       
SPRING CRAFT CLASSES
Craft classes meet twice a month on a Wednesday morning beginning at 9:00 am.  Classes may be added as we get instructors.  All classes must be registered for and prepaid in the office at least 48 hours prior to the class.  All supplies are included in the class fee and all classes begin at 10:00 am.

Look for samples of these projects in the center hallway soon!!!! Keep your eyes on the craft class board for some new crafts we will be offering for the spring.

THEATER CLASS
The Theater class continues to meet every Tuesday from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm in the Multi-purpose Room.  The free class ends on April 12, 2016.  You do not need any experience to enjoy these classes.  
 
THURSDAY DINNER MENU
Here is the dinner menu for our Thursday night dinners: April 7, 2016 -- Meatloaf; April 14, 2016 -- Spaghetti; April 21, 2016 -- Baked Chicken; and April 28, 2016 -- Pork Chop Casserole.  Remember that dinner begins at 5:00 pm every Thursday and you can sign up in the office.  
   
TRAVEL CLUB
The club is always accepting new members who want to learn about trips, plan upcoming trips, and raise money to help with the cost of trips.  Join Deborah following the Red Hat Club monthly meeting every first Monday of the month.  For April, that will be on the 4th.  The meeting will be around 10:00 am in the kitchen.     
       
UKELELE BAND
Remember that the new time for Ukulele Band is 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm every Monday in the kitchen.  No previous experience is needed.  
 
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR APRIL
Advisory Council:
new members needed to attend monthly meeting (April 11, 2016)
Birthday Party: set up and cleanup (1 person on April 5, 2016)
Breakfast: set up and cleanup (1-2 on March 29, 2016)
Instructors: needed to teach new classes of their choose (daily)
Library: Shelving books (1 person twice a month)
Reception Area: answering telephones and greeting members (1-2 per day)
Thursday Evening Dinner: set up and cleanup (2 people every Thursday)
          
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PROMOTE WILSON
The center is working with Historic Downtown Wilson to help with a booth at the Downtown Farmer's Market.  Beginning on April 16, 2016, we are looking for volunteers for either shift (8:30 -- 10:30 am or 10:30 -- 1:00 pm) to be at the booth promoting Wilson's downtown area.  Everything you need will be provided.  The market is located on Green Street behind the City of Wilson building.  There is always great produce, goods, meats and entertainment.  If you can help with a shift, please sign up in the office.

WALKING CLUB
The walking club will meet on Tuesdays & Fridays at 9:00 am at the front door.  You can walk as little or as much as you like.  Our path takes us through the Botanical Gardens at the Ag Center which will be beautiful as the flowers and trees come to life again.  Be sure to pick up a pedometer in the office and a log sheet, so you can keep tract of your miles.  We will celebrate our achievements later in the year.  
     
YOGA
Carol Murray will be having Yoga Class every Monday in April from 9:30 am until 10:30 am in the Multi-Purpose Room.  The dates for April are the 3th, 11th, 18th & 25th.  New Members are welcome.
